iPadOS 13.4 is ready: This is new

  • Extensive trackpad support
  • Navigation revision in Mail
  • iCloud Drive folder sharing now possible
  • New Memoji Stickers
  • Universal app purchases

Trackpad support for all iPad models

Not only the iPad Pro can now be connected to a trackpad, but also all other iPad models that support the new software. Apple allows users to use the iPad extensively without touching the screen. Both the home screen and the control center are easy to reach, and there are also some new multi-touch gestures for the trackpad to switch between apps or get to the app switcher.

According to Apple, the precision of drag’n’drop, text selection and navigation in general should improve significantly. Software ceo Craig Federighi introduced the feature in person, pointing to the small changes to a mouse on the Mac. In addition to the new Magic Keyboard, the iPad also supports Apple’s Magic Mouse (2), Magic Trackpad (2) and third-party products.

Better operation of mail

While Apple made big changes to Mail on the iPhone, Apple held back on the iPad. When composing emails, however, Apple now separates the addition of documents from document scanning, so that the functions are a quicker touch.

iCloud Drive: Apple catches up

Another useful feature is sharing iCloud Drive folders. The feature should already appear with iPadOS 13 and only now seems to be working reliably. Apple is catching up with its cloud competitors, allowing users to easily share entire folders. Previously, you could only share individual files. As a result, several users can now work on projects at the same time and make the data available to everyone in a synchronized manner.

Memojis and universal purchases

iPadOS 13 introduced Memoji stickers, even for devices without a TrueDepth camera. This allowed the creation of personal memojis, which then automatically converts the operating system for the emoji keyboard into stickers. The memoji takes several poses known from the emojis. The new update brings nine more stickers like a laughing face with hearts, party moods or even a shocked face.

From the close proximity between iPadOS and macOS, Apple is increasingly making a virtue and is now introducing cross-platform universal apps. This gives users an app free of charge on other platforms. Previously, this was limited to iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV only. With the update, they’re also available for macOS, so developers can now also create app packages from apps for different platforms. In-app purchases are now also transferable to other devices.
