The new PC and laptop offers in the price check

Aldi Süd is offering three new medion devices starting this week, Thursday: two laptops and a desktop PC will be available in the discounter’s range from 26 March 2020. The spectrum ranges from cheap office computers to expensive gaming flagships. GIGA has examined the computers and tells you which ones are really worth it.

Cheap Office Calculator with Gaming Potential: Medion Akoya E62009

The desktop PC starts with the new catalogue of Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd: the Medion Akoya E62009. Aldi wants 499 euros for the computer – at first glance a low price if you look at the installed components: a current i5 processor with integrated graphics unit, 16 GB DDR4 memory, 512 GB PCIe SSD – and even Windows 10 is already pre-installed on the system.

In addition, the PC has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 ex-factory and can also boast an integrated DVD burner and a variety of connectors. Even a multi-card reader is integrated into the tower. The scope of delivery also includes a bundle of USB mouse and keyboard. As usual with Aldi, there is a warranty period of 3 years.

Good to know: The power of the processor’s integrated graphics unit isn’t really enough to gamble. Since Medion also only installs a 250-watt power supply in the PC, one should at most install a graphics card without a separate power connection in the computer. For example, the GTX 1650 would be suitable for this purpose. This is somewhere between GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1060 in terms of performance – in most cases, this should be enough to play in full HD. If you want to install a better graphics card in the computer, you also have to change the power supply.

The main technical features of the Medion Akoya E62009:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-9400 (6 cores x 4.1 GHz)
  • Graphics card: none available
  • Memory: 16GB DDR4 RAM x 2,666 MHz
  • Hard drive / storage: 512 GB PCIe-SSD
  • OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
  • Connectivity: Multi-card reader / 4x USB 3.0 / 1x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type C / 1x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type A / 2x USB 2.0 / 1x Microphone / 1x Headphones 1x LAN (RJ-45) / 1x HDMI / 1x DisplayPort
  • integrated DVD burner
  • USB mouse and keyboard included
  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 17.0 x 38.0 x 38.5 cm / 7.75 kg
  • Special feature: Hot-swap hard drive swap slider

But is it worth investing in the Office calculator at all? A similarly potent equipment is currently hardly offered at the same price. And what about screwing up your PC yourself? A one-to-one comparison proves difficult here, as Medion does not specify all the installed components of the Medion Akoya E62009 on the official website. However, those who are similar system clicks together, currently lands at a price of around 555 euros – mouse and keyboard not included and the handling in the case of warranty is likely to be much more difficult.

In other words, the offer for the Medion Akoya E62009 for 499 euros is really impressive. The desktop PC will be available in Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd stores from 26 March 2020.

Powerful office laptop: Medion Akoya P15648

Also interesting is the office laptop that Aldi offers via the “Aldi Supplies” program at the end of March: The 15.6-inch Medion Akoya P15648 has a lot under its hood: an i7 10th generation processor, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and a dedicated graphics chip in the form of an Nvidia GeForce MX 250 – all of which are available for just 799 euros.

This combination not only provides plenty of steam when working, but can also be used to play a few current games. You shouldn’t expect particularly high frame rates, but for a smooth round Anno 1404, Civilization 6 or Cities: Skylines the performance is probably easy enough. The 15.6-inch Full HD display with IPS panel provides rich colors, but doesn’t offer the best response times. In other words, fast movements can result in a blurred representation of the image content. However, this circumstance is only likely to be noticeable in fast games such as shooters.

Good to know: Despite the lavish equipment of 1.85 kilograms, the weight is still very light. The keyboard offers backlighting, the aluminium housing makes the laptop robust. If you are about to get to the office and have forgotten to charge your laptop beforehand, you will be pleased that the notebook also has a quick-charging function. Oh, Windows 10 is also pre-installed on your laptop. Here, too, Aldi has a guaranteed term of a whopping 3 years.

The laptop can be ordered through both Aldi Nord and Aldi South via the “Aldi Supplies” program from 26 March 2020.

Gaming laptop at Aldi: Medion Erazer X17805

If that’s not enough power, Aldi will also be delivering a real gaming laptop right home at the end of March: the Medion Erazer X17805. The 17.3-inch gaming notebook costs a whopping 1,999 euros, but has also installed quite potent hardware in the case. The Intel Core i7-9750H offers massive performance to play, but also for image or video editing, while the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 in Max Q design provides smooth frame rates on the 144Hz display with Full HD resolution. A 1 TB PCIe SSD is available as memory, and a 32 GB kit of DDR4 RAM with a clock rate of 2,666 MHz is used as memory.

In addition, the Medion Erazer X17805 is one of the few gaming notebooks with a mechanical keyboard with RGB lighting. Particularly interesting: Despite the large display and the potent hardware, the weight at around 2.6 kilograms is still quite passable. But you probably don’t want to carry the laptop around with you permanently. In addition to the weight, this is probably also because of the rather moderate battery life. If you use the laptop in power-saving mode for office-only work, you will get over half a working day with difficulty and hardship. If, on the other hand, you torment the battery by actually throwing a game on the go, the oven is probably out after just under an hour.

The most important technical key data of the Medion Erazer X17805 at a glance:

  • 17.3-inch Full HD Display with IPS Technology
  • Intel Core i7-9750H Processor (6 cores x 4.5 GHz)
  • 32GB DDR4 RAM x 2,666 MHz
  • 1TB PCIe SSD
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX RTX 2070 Max-Q with 8GB VRAM
  • Windows 10 Home 64 bit
  • Stereo speaker with Dolby Audio
  • Keyboard with backlight
  • 2.6 kilograms
  • SD card reader, 2x USB 3.1 Type A, 1x USB 3.1 Type C, 1X USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 2x Mini-DP, 1x audio combo port, 1x LAN (RJ-45)
  • Battery with 47 Wh capacity

Although 2,000 euros for a gaming laptop sounds like a lot of money, the price of the equipment is perfectly fine. In any case, we couldn’t find a laptop with the same equipment at a lower price. The gaming laptop can be ordered via both Aldi Nord and Aldi South via the “Aldi Supplies” program from 26 March 2020.
