The Poco F2 Pro is the flagship killer we’ve been waiting for

The successor to the popular Pocophone F1 from 2018 was presented today by Xiaomi in an online event. Once again, a sub-brand of Xiaomi has managed to attract attention with a terrific price-performance ratio. Here are all the details about the Poco F2 Pro.

The Poco F2 Pro is essentially a Redmi K30 Pro under a different brand. Since the introduction of F1, Xiaomi has also renamed the original Pocophone to Poco. With the Poco X2, a renamed Redmi K30 4G, we got an insight into this complicated network of Xiaomi and its sub-brands. However, the Poco F2 Pro is the true successor to the Pocophone F1.

Lots of power under the hood

The Poco F2 Pro is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, up to 8GB of fast LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS-3.1 storage. A version with 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of storage is also available.

Apart from the top chipset, which is available in smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, the Poco F2 Pro has the brand’s so-called LiquidCool technology 2.0. We saw this sophisticated cooling technology on the original Pocophone F1 and JerryRigEverything proved that it was more than just a marketing slogan when he took the phone apart on his YouTube channel. Now version 2.0 will have a 3435 mm2 cooling chamber and multi-layer graphite to reduce the CORE CPU temperature by up to 14°C.

The Poco F2 Pro is also a 5G smartphone, and it offers support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.

Design and display

The Poco F2 Pro features a 6.67-inch AMOLED display called the Ultimate Full Screen Display. Thanks to a pop-up selfie camera, it’s completely free of distress or holes – a dying trend, but one I’m sympathetic to in this smartphone.

The resolution is 2,400 x 1,080, which makes this panel an FHD+ screen. It supports HDR10+ and features a sensor called a 360° triple ambient light sensor by Poco to ensure accurate ambient light detection and smooth brightness adjustment. Under the Gorilla Glass 5 there is an optical fingerprint sensor.

What is interesting here is that there is no 90 Hz or 120 Hz refresh rate, as we have seen with most of the flagship smartphones of the top manufacturers this year. This is one of the few areas where the cost of a smartphone can be kept at a lower level.

Four cameras and 8K video recording

In the camera area Xiaomi does not gnart with the Poco F2 Pro. There are a total of four camera sensors on the back. The star of the show is a 64-megapixel Sony IMX686. There is also a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5-megapixel telemacro lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Poco says this combination will provide “detailed close-ups with unprecedented bokeh.”

The F2 Pro also supports video recording at 8K (24 fps) and 4K (60 fps). This was an outstanding feature of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Despite the fact that 8K video recording on mobile phones has been criticized for eating a lot of memory and offering no real added value, it’s a real statement to integrate the high-end feature on a phone like the Poco F2 Pro.

On the front of the Poco F2 Pro is a 20-megapixel pop-up camera with multi-color notification light and slow motion function at 120 frames per second.

30 W fast charge and a 4,700 mAh battery

A sumptuous 4,700mAh battery is also built in, but it’s the fast-charging technology that aims to match the top players on the market. Poco says the 30W fast charge can charge the device to 64 percent in just 30 minutes and 100 percent in 63 minutes. A compatible 33W charger comes with the smartphone. However, there is no wireless reverse charging.

The headphone jack lives on

The Poco F2 pro has a 3.5mm headphone jack. Fans of wired headphones will be thrilled. This is probably the only real high-end smartphone that will have this “feature” in 2020.

Price and availability

Finally, we come to the price. That’s what really makes a flagship killer. The 6GB/128GB version of the Poco F2 Pro costs 499 euros in Europe. The 8GB/256GB version is available for 599 euros. It is available in grey, violet, blue and white.

For me, this price is crazy. In 2020, you will struggle to find a better value for money than this one. The Pocophone F1 was launched for 399 euros and twisted heads due to its high-end chipset and performance; but the smartphone was a plastic bomber. The Poco F2 Pro has all the design and hardware features of a 1,000-euro smartphone – for half the money.

Is the Poco F2 Pro the flagship killer we’ve all been waiting for? We can’t wait to test it to find out.
