The Süddeutsche Zeitung has published an article, which considers the disinfection of the smartphone with chemical agents as not urgently necessary. According to the medical director of the German Advisory Centre for Hygiene (BZH) quoted in it, it is more important “the Wash hands regularly and thoroughly.

Mobile phone hygiene: tips from the accessories provider

The accessory manufacturer Zagg provides two simple pieces of advice in the wake of the coronavirus spread, which GIGA also advocates:

  1. Clean your smartphone twice a day.
  2. Due to the Use of Bluetooth headphones or headsets the risk of spreading is also minimized, as the smartphone is not constantly pressed on your cheek when making a phone call.

Clean your mobile phone normally: Which cloth, which cleaning agent?

The most important rule first: No aggressive detergents and no abrasives! These jeopardize the grease-repellent display coating of modern smartphones. The components contained in abrasives (e.g. quartz flour) can even scratch the screen forever. If you want to be on the safe side, only use a water-dampened (not wet!) when cleaning your smartphone. , e.g. a lens cloth. This cleaning method is approximately from iPhone maker Apple Recommended (Addendum: See update box above).

Without cleaning agents, however, you don’t get fat stains and fingerprints away so easily. It gets easier with the help suitable cleaning agent. We recommend that you pay attention to the manufacturer’s description: Is the product explicitly suitable for cleaning smartphones? If this is not clearly detectable, then prefer to use a different cleaner.

We have good experience with the expensive but high-quality cleaning products made by the German lens manufacturer Zeiss. These are available as a comprehensive Complete, including practical bladder to remove dust:

For quick cleaning in between, Smartphone cleaning wipes:

Glass cleaner or dishwashing liquid: Is it allowed to clean mobile phones?

The use of conventional glass cleaners and detergents from the household is generally not recommended. There is too great a risk that it contains ingredients that could damage the mobile phone (especially the anti-grease coating of the display).

Some smartphone users still swear by it and use the comparatively cheap one to clean up the smartphone display. According to the manufacturer, this product is suitable for cleaning “screen surfaces” – but there is no mention of smartphones in particular. This tip should therefore be at your own risk be tried out. In the past, we cleaned an iPhone 8 several times and couldn’t see a negative effect.

Cleaning your phone: 3 steps to a clean smartphone

The display and the back of a smartphone are best cleaned just as you clean glasses properly. Before cleaning, make sure that there are no coarse dust or even grains of sand on the mobile phone. Also important: The Turn off your mobile phone before cleaning And that Unplugging the charging cable.

Our recommendation:

  1. Lightly moisten clean microfiber cloth with or water (do not spray directly on your mobile phone!).
  2. Wipe the phone completely with the damp area of the cloth. This can result in smearing – this is the dissolved grease dirt.
  3. Remove a dry spot or a second, dry microfiber cloth and remove the dissolved dirt with circular wiping movements until no more streaks are visible.

In this way, you can also get the camera lenses clean. In the end, the Visual inspection with the naked eye: Hold the phone at different angles against the light and move slowly. Only when no more spots or streaks can be seen from any position, the surface (or the camera module) is really clean. Even a slight veil on the lens can be noticeable in mobile phone photos through blurry shots.

Clean mobile phone jacks and speaker openings properly

A particular challenge are the places where the mobile phone is “open”. These include the jack for headphones, the openings for the speakers and the connection for charging (Micro-USB, USB-C or Lightning). A tenacious and difficult to remove dirt from dust and sebum accumulates here for months, which cannot be removed with the surface cleaning described above. These places must be addressed separately and with suitable “tools”.

Suitable is a . Also (slightly moistened with water) Cotton swab And Toothpick to clean hard-to-reach areas on the phone. On to find.

But: This should only be done with the utmost caution, otherwise you will cause damage. Many small movements without pressure are better than single, frantic shocks. For cotton swabs, make sure that no fibers loosen and are stuck to contacts or speaker grilles. We also strongly advise against using metal objects such as knives, tweezers or needles.

Mobile phone disinfection: Hygiene starts with smartphones

Many mobile phone users are unaware that they touch a germ spot with their hands several times a day. On mobile phones, on average, find more bacteria than, say, a toilet seat. This is no reason to panic – but it’s quite an opportunity to keep your smartphone clean. After Information from TÜV Rheinland Cleans only one in four Germans regularly his mobile phone thoroughly. One in eight clean
his mobile phone even never.

“Mobile phones, especially smartphones, should be cleaned and maintained regularly. This is not just a question of aesthetics. Mobile phones can transmit germs, and right now in the cold season, regular cleaning of displays and keyboards makes sense,” Bitkom expert Bernd Klusmann. Also Dr. Wiete Schramm (doctor at TÜV Rheinland) Recommends, smartphones and tablets to clean regularly. “Increased risk of infection exists (…) for people with weak immune systems or cold waves. (…) If you use a mobile phone or tablet while eating, tiny food residues can be left behind, which then again serve as a perfect breeding ground for further germs.”

The display cleaner from “Ag+”, with silver-tenside combination against germs, is highly rated by Amazon customers:

Even the Easy cleaning of the surface with a microfiber cloth reduces the risk – Microbiologists at the University of Furtwangen found that the germs can be reduced by up to 80 percent. So: A freshly cleaned mobile phone not only looks better, but isadvantage from a hygienic point of view.
